The four EU CitiVerse projects: Overview and latest developments
On 24 February 2026, the Living-in.EU initiative hosted the online event “The four EU CitiVerse projects: Overview and latest developments.” The session brought together the four EU-funded CitiVerse projects developing applications for the European CitiVerse—SENSE, x-CITE, CU (European CitiVerses Uniting for Inclusiveness) and 3DxVERSE—to share their first results and discuss progress after the first year of work.
These leading European initiatives showcased progress in building immersive, citizen-centred digital environments and highlighted how the emerging CitiVerse concept enables citizens, communities and city authorities to interact in virtual spaces using AR/VR technologies, supporting more inclusive and participatory urban planning.
Representing SENSE, Juan Francisco Inglés (Libelium) and Katharina Volpp (Kiel-Marketing) presented the project’s latest achievements and its pilot in Kiel, Germany. Their contribution illustrated how augmented reality can bring cities’ cultural heritage to life by overlaying historical layers onto the present urban landscape. Through interactive 3D models and mobile-based experiences, SENSE is fostering stronger connections between citizens, visitors and their environment, reinforcing a sense of belonging.
The session also demonstrated how SENSE fits within a broader ecosystem of EU-funded CitiVerse projects, each addressing key urban challenges such as sustainability, accessibility and citizen engagement. Together, these initiatives underline the transformative potential of digital twins and immersive technologies in shaping more liveable, inclusive and data-driven European cities.
